The Mumbai Crisis – A Blessing for 65 Pakistani Families

It has been an amazing post Mumbai performance by the Indian government – but only for those Pakistanis who do not understand Indians and their politics. The rest of us Pakistanis retreated to our corners, waiting for the emotions to unwind – confident in the fact that India will not trifle with a nuclear Pakistan.Mean while the lunatics on both sides must be allowed to rail.

Consequently few Indians were interested in offering sane responses to my blogs highlighting the need for Indian public and government to remain sober and opt for a joint investigation of the Mumbai Mayhem with Pakistan. Even fewer liked my proposals for enlarging the scope of investigations to include the formation of a permanent body empowered to investigate the killing of Hemant Karkare,as well as all future terrorist activities in the sub-continent in which either side blames the other !

The atmosphere on this site reminded me of the time –more then a decade back- when India conducted its first nuclear weapons test.

For four day’s there after, Pakistani’s world wide were confronted with a sustained barrage of choice invectives and slurs emanating from those Indians who owned a demented fascist mind (but India has plenty of these). While the rest of the world leaders–with the USA at the forefront - exerted pressure on Nawaz Sharif not to test Pakistan’s nukes!

Thank God Nawaz resisted the pressure and exploded almost twice the nukes India had in its own tests. The fascists were stunned, and peace returned immediately to our ‘eastern front’ – as well as over the internet!

This time too the play has been similar. At a time when Pakistan was in a full blown crisis of it’s own: with an anti- terrorist war was in full swing in FATA; the recent induction of a new and inexperienced civilian democratic government after decades of military rule; and in the grip of it’s worst ever economic crisis which India had already exacerbated by cutting of Pakistan’s share of the water supply; our neighbour choose to avail a golden opportunity to stab us in the back ,rather then co-operate with Pakistan in unearthing the villains.

Thus at the earliest opportunity and without any verification of it’s claimed evidence, it launched a world wide campaign aimed at slander and isolation of Pakistan-and Pakistanis - world wide. Even USA and UK joined in on this!

The JF-17 Thunder Fighter Jet: A Pak-China Joint Production.

India’s FM threatened Zardari with dire consequences-then denied he ever made the call. The Indian Air force threatened surgical strikes and violated Pakistan air space twice, but were driven off. A resolution was passed in the UN (Again without any evidence) declaring the JUI a terrorist organization. The Americans even advised Pakistan of an immanent Indian attack, and reportedly requested Pakistan not to react to any Indian surgical strike (friends indeed!). As a final baring of fangs the Indian Army moved to the borders, with India declaring it as just the normal winter maneuvers!

But as every one including their aunts know, in this region, winter collective training starts at the sub-unit levels by end October culminating in Corps /Army level maneuvers which end – and not commence - by second week of December! And so Pakistan was not fooled ,and this Sunday pulled out some forces from the fight against terrorists (to the North) and moved the bulk of it’s army to it’s borders against India .And presto all the tensions start to diminish , and peace starts to make a come back!

Three separate reports on Monday from different parts of India indicate the recent deafening anti-Pakistan hysteria is hopefully abating. In Shimla, India’s Junior Foreign Minister Anand Sharma stated that New Delhi was not fixing a timeframe for Pakistan but it expected the leadership to act demonstratively against the attackers of Mumbai. In Kolkata, Foreign Minister Mr. Mukherjee who was holding forth about some ominous-sounding unilateral actions till recently, actually made a strong defense of Islam, even accusing its unnamed detractors of misrepresenting it. And in Amritsar, a short drive from Lahore, police were preparing to repatriate on Tuesday 65 Pakistanis languishing in Indian jails.

So while wondering if Pakistan and Indian peoples as well as their governments - or even their so called allies - have learned any lessons from Mumbai- a subject I intend perusing in another blog ; I console myself with the fact that at least for 65 Pakistanis, including three women who were lodged in different jails across India, this crisis may yet herald the end of an ordeal.

Your brilliant post, as usual, could have avoided the riders and attributes such as ’but only for those Pakistanis who do not understand Indians and their politics’.

Anil,
After all that I have to bear on this site, please do allow that I too am human. Anyway lets hope the mud slinging is over - and we can return to sanity and a sober assessment of what can and needs to be done.

hope things turn out for the better. What pakistan must look forward is joining WTO and better economic policies.
This probably cannot be given an explanation but stronger economy does ensure lesser extremists and fundamentalists.

You could have represented the article in a much better manner, with a quite good use of language. fascists in India! Agreed, they are there, but where democracy gets uprooted like in Pakistan, don’t you think fascists do exist? please no mud-slinging. that isn’t going to give any +ve outcome.

Ameya’

By the way that is one of the sweetest sounding names I have ever come across in my life.Really I mean it.What does it mean?

Thanks for the comments.Money is not a problem with the normal Pakistanis. It’s the way we use - or more correctly misuse it.

Pakistani’s are the biggest investors in real estate in Dubai; It’s nationals have more money outside the country in foreign bank accounts then the aid it gets in 40 years. Even our fundamentalists can finance a war against the west from the hundreds of billions of dollars a year they earn from poppy growing and drug trade.

What will economic policies achieve when all who make their money insist on investing it outside the country???

We are like the proverbial lazy man who has a hordes of wealth-he barely does enough to survive;and yet in every crisis he pulls up his socks and pulls through as he always had the potential to do very well.

That is why inspite of all the crazy things we do, we are also the leading Muslim nation in science and technology - manufacturing the worlds best missiles, jets and tanks!!!...and a nuclear power. The Indians kept us on our toes in this aspect at least!!!

Language between Indians and Pakistanis has always been a problem;and though like you I wish it had been better;alas our emotions and rivalry does get the better of both our expressions -as well as our emotions.Sadly one learns to live with this.

I shall go to your blg and see what you write there....And my next blog is all about ”facist Hindus”,and so perhaps you will not like it.Though I have never understood why the good Hindus should get bugged when we criticize fascism.

Anyways, from what all you wrote, somewhere I think Pakistan is happy with all that it has!

And yeah, are you sure Pakistan is manufacturing the world’s best missiles, jets and tanks? I think you meant from the Muslim world. No wonder that job is best done by the country that is always at war somewhere or the other, the US.

Regarding nukes, yes it was India that forced Pakistan into nuclear power and kept it on its toes. But, the question I have is, why aren’t the fundamentalists which you claim can finance a war against the West go and have a war with the very West they so hate?

Fascism itself is a very bad concept. Not the good Hindus, but any good person would get bugged if kept talking on fascism for long.

I suppose fascism means ’extreme right-wing dictatorship’. Luckily, in India the fascists are not directly in power, and all of them honestly accept that they love fascism in their interviews or press releases.

I think all Muslim countries will do much better if they opt for democracy successfully. Getting a benign dictator sounds great, but is not practically possible in today’s world in so many countries.

Oh and ya, my name is one of the many names of Ganesha, the God of Intelligence. (hope you aren’t laughing :) )

Ameya,
Only a fool is unhappy over his lot;the wiser learn to accept and improve it.

No doubt about the missiles and the tanks-specially as i am an ex military man.about the jet-well it’s pretty close.certainly better then the LCA.

And i am surprised about this statement of yours:why aren’t the fundamentalists which you claim can finance a war against the West go and have a war with the very West they so hate?.....don’t you know there is a world wide war going on between them already and it is known as ’the war on terror. Why only the other day Mumbay was struck so cruelly.
Any good person would get bugged if kept talking on fascism for long....Precisely;....and what should Pakistani’s do if Indians talk and comment all the time about Pakistan’s fundamentalists and blaming Pakistan and Islam for it???

In India they have been in power once and will be again in India;..and I am sure you would agree there is a big difference between right wing fascists who hold to a vision of India as an exclusive Hindu state and espouses an acrimonious, anti-minority, religious supremacist agenda -and a benign military dictatorship.

What good has democracy done for the majority of Indians who are as exploited, deprived and poor as before?
dictatorship and democracy are both equally useless where they fail to provide good governance.

Ameya , no I am not smiling ..or frowning either...it’s still a pretty name ..and I still want to know what it means.i am sure it must.

Yeah, its true the wiser accept and learn to improve. Some only learn but do not improve. And good to know you are an ex-military man. Didi you go on any war with India? War on terror is going of course! I did forget that. Well, ”and what should Pakistani’s do if Indians talk > and comment all the time about Pakistan’s fundamentalists and blaming > Pakistan and Islam for it???” Ok fine. If you get bugged why don’t you tell this then. Communicate and ease out the problems. Why the hell you feel the need to taunt on the other person? By calling others bad, one proves himself as bad. So, tell out the problems like this which you have. Yes, the fascists came in power once. I don’t find them any sort of anti-minority. Even Muslims and Christians work for them. But, yes they have a stand for the majority. They are unnecessarily hyped I must say. It went into the backburner once they got elected. Yes, they escalated the India’s growth like never before though only in urban parts. Hence, they lost next time. Benign military dictatorship! Hehe, why is it removed if it was benign?? And democracy did nothing good for India as such, but the poverty of people is slowly fading. There are many poor yet, but poverty is vanishing fast. That’s all what I can say.

Ameya Waghmare,
’”Ok fine. If you get bugged why don’t you tell this then”. Tell whom;the ones whose only aim is to bug you?Maam I prefer to give them what they enjoy...with the one ’s interested in a genuine discussion I discuss.I call no one bad..only treat everybody as they deserve.
”’Didi you go on any war with India?”yes three;and believe me i at this age have nothing but remorse for the misery i may have brought to so many mothers.
”I don’t find them any sort of anti-minority. Even Muslims and Christians work for them”.All I can reply to that is you have a right to your opinion. Some Muslims and Christians working for them proves what -even some British and Jews worked for Hitler.

For the same reason political governments are removed-corruption and mis-governance.
